To be competitive in the job market for .NET web positions you need these things:

  • Certifications Especially from Microsoft
  • Hands-on Experience
  • Good skills on the Language & Tools (which is a by product of the above two)

This books "MCAD/MCSD Training Guide (70-315): Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Visual C# and Visual Studio.NET"
by Kalani is based on the 70-315 Certification Objectives as outlined by Microsoft and has developed a comprehensive study plan around
them.

The book is built in such a way that each topic explained deeply and is followed by a number of exercises which provide hands-on
practice to build a clear understanding of the topics and reinforce the concepts.

It is very important to read each concept and
write some code, which helps understand things better.

Kalani Covers each topic starting from the basics of .Net Framework till the stages of Deployment of an Asp .Net website. A sample
of the chapters covered are

  • Web forms Introduction
  • Controls
  • User Interface, Error Handling
  • Data Binding
  • Assemblies in .Net
  • Globalization
  • Testing
  • Deployment

As you learn each of the objectives that are expected to be on the cert exam, you are also learning how to do it so, once you
pass that cert and show up on the job somewhere, you will not only have cert exam passing skills, you will also have the C#
ASP.NET development skills that the cert exam is supposed to be testing.

As with many readers, using this book alone is enough to learn how to program with ASP.NET and enough to pass the exam. And it needs
real effort. Generally people with around an 6+ months of Development experience in Asp .Net can easily pass the exam with this book.
The questions at the back of each chapter (and the end of the book) are representative samples of the questions you'll face on the
day of the cert exam. Though this does not give the exact questions(which is illegal), it gives a very good idea of how surprising
the test questions can be.

A Test taker may need to use one of the better Certification preparation practice exam products such as TestKing or Transcender.
The sample PrepLogic exam in the back of this book is also good for reviewing the concepts but it is not as good as TestKing or
Transcender which are updated regularly and have variations of some of the latest questions on them. People Suggest TESTKING
+ KALANI would be a good combination to get a passing score on the 70-315 certification.

A good advice from many test takers is even though the 70-315 certifications are very focused on the details of
the C# .NET languages, if the test taker is not familiar with the C# language then they should first bring themselves up to speed
on the C# language front before preparing for the web (ASP.NET) cert. The Kalani books makes no attempt to teach the language part
of C#.

Some people say Kalani is a better choice than the Microsoft self-study "redbook." The objective of the MS redbooks seems to be
to teach you the concepts that are tested on the cert, but not to prepare you for the specific questions that will appear.

To summarize the chapters in Kalani are long (some over 100 pages), but if you make the effort to do most or all of the exercises
and practice the questions in the back of each chapter, you will learn the topic. If you supplement that with a TestKing or
Transcender, you will have everything you need to pass the exam.
