Microsoft and Japan's
Fujitsu said Monday that
both companies will
cooperate on
"mission-critical" computer
systems, to provide better
service for customers.
"Mission-critical" systems perform tasks so vital that they cannot
be allowed to malfunction,
such as air traffic control
systems and bank transfer
operations.
Both the companies already have an alliance generating a revenue of
about $3.2 billion in 2003.
"We are committed to take our global alliance to the next level
beyond enterprise computing
to mission-critical
computing, which really has
been a cornerstone of
Fujitsu's business for many,
many, many years," Microsoft
Chief Executive Steve
Ballmer told reporters here.
Under the agreement of the two companies, they will collaborate in
developing Fujitsu's
next-generation servers
running Microsoft's Windows
operating systems. Currently
most of the mission critical
systems run either on unix
or mainframe based systems.
Fujitsu plans to put the current version of Windows in its new
high-end servers to be
launched next year 2005, and
aims to start selling
high-performance servers
using the next version of
Microsoft's operating
system, Longhorn, in 2007.
