A long running case pending against Microsoft at European Union court has gone against Microsoft. The European Competition Commissioner Mario Monti had ruled that Microsoft has failed to provide a fair and common platform for competition in the market for Server Software by offering Windows Media Player with the operating system, this stifling the competition. The court has also fined Microsoft a mind boggling $613 million.

Microsoft is now given 120 days to provide information that it allows other Server makers to compete fairly and it has 90 days to remove the Windows Media Player from its Windows Operating system.

Microsoft is planning to appeal against this judgment at European court of first instance. But analysts say that it is highly unlikely that the case will go in Microsoft's favor.

A lot of supporting and opposing opinions have been voiced after this judgment. The US department of justice has issued a statement saying, the previous case with it had enough to make Microsoft change its business practices substantially.

Others say that forcing the removal of the Windows Media Player may have some unintended consequences in the area of competition. The people in the opposite side of Microsoft had favored the judgment with a vociferous note.
